Exercise Guidelines For Your Treadmill Workout

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Your treadmill workout can put you in the fast track to losing weight. As with all exercises, however, you need to know the proper steps to take to be able to get the maximum benefit. Even something as simple as walking or jogging on your treadmill has some technical aspects that you should consider.

Since you will be primarily using your feet in a treadmill exercise, it is important that you learn how to walk properly. To get the most out of your walking exercises, you have to observe the following: 1) the way your feet touch the ground, 2) how you swing your arms, and 3) how your torso moves.

Your feet are the most important component of your treadmill exercise. As you put your foot forward and your heel strikes the ground, raise your toes and roll forward onto the outside of your foot, while still keeping your entire shoe sole on the ground. As your foot passes under your body, straighten up your knee and push down on the ground with the ball of your foot, sustaining the same amount of pressure until your toes leave the ground.

Keep your arms at your sides and let them swing in the same direction as your legs and torso. As you increase your speed, bend your arms at a right angle and swing them faster, keeping in pace with your legs.

As for your torso, remember to walk from your waist. Your hips should be able to move naturally with the movement of your legs. Keep your shoulders relaxed and facing forward. This will allow for more harmonious movements as you walk on your treadmill.

Things To Consider When Shopping For a Treadmill

Shopping for your treadmill can be a relatively easy task, but if you’re not careful, you might end up with one that is not optimal for your needs. To avoid wasting money on a machine that you will dislike (and therefore never use), you have to do your homework before you make the purchase.

Here are some things to consider when you’re shopping for your treadmill:

First, what features does the treadmill have? Treadmills can range from very cheap to ridiculously expensive, depending on the features they carry. You will want to find the machine that can meet your needs, not one that overly exceeds them. You don’t want to spend money for a full-feature treadmill when one with half the features will suit you just fine.

Second, ask yourself: where do you intend to place the treadmill? Ideally, the machine should be placed somewhere where you can see it all the time, or somewhere that is easily accessible. The adage “out of sight, out of mind” applies here. If you can’t see your treadmill on a regular basis, chances are that you won’t be using it on a regular basis either.

Lastly, up to how much are you willing to spend? A treadmill is an excellent investment, but you should still place a ceiling on how much you are willing to shell out. You can get a better idea for treadmill prices by asking around in a local gym, or perhaps friends and family who have their own machines. Based on their quotes and recommendations, you should be able to make an educated decision.

A final word of caution: Remember that your treadmill will do you no good unless you actually step on it and use it.
